01 What this means for your application

Generally safe

  • Draft and revise your essays manually, allowing your authentic voice and intellectual character to come through naturally.
  • Have a trusted mentor, counselor, or family member review your essays for feedback — human editing and guidance is acceptable.

Things to Avoid

  • If applying to the BLS program, be especially careful — AI assistance in writing samples carries its own explicit prohibition beyond the general admissions policy.
  • Do not take text generated by an AI tool and paste it into any part of your application, even if you edit it afterward.
02 Policy evidence
  • we expect that candidates' responses to all application questions are authentically their own and reflective of their abilities

05 Policy summary
  • Applicants are prohibited from submitting any content copied from AI resources or authored by AI; violations can result in candidacy compromise or full admission rescission.

  • Wesleyan has an explicit AI prohibition titled 'Authenticity, AI, and the Use of Agents' on its international applicants page, though the policy language — covering 'all application questions' — applies broadly to all undergraduate applicants.

  • Program-specific rules exist: the Bachelor of Liberal Studies (BLS) program separately bans AI in writing samples, making that program subject to a stricter, additional layer of restriction.

  • Wesleyan does not appear on any major admissions hub platform (e.g., Common App AI policy hub), so this policy is sourced directly from the university's own admissions pages.

06 Additional context

Wesleyan has an explicit AI prohibition under the heading 'Authenticity, AI, and the Use of Agents' on the international applicants page. The policy acknowledges AI tools exist but prohibits submitting any content copied from or authored by AI. Compliance includes candidacy compromise or admission rescission. The policy appears on the international applicants page but its language ('all application questions') applies broadly to all undergraduate applicants. The BLS program separately prohibits AI in writing samples. The institutional Generative AI Statement addresses academic coursework only, not admissions. The admissions FAQ and application process pages contain no AI-specific language. URL structure has changed from /admission/informationfor/international.html to /admission/undergraduate-admission/international/.
