Memorability and Distinctiveness of the Closing Movement
Evaluates whether the ending earns its place by resolving, complicating, or reframing the central idea rather than simply stopping. Strong endings leave a residue the reader carries out of the essay.
Control of the Conceit Through the Ending
Judges whether the governing metaphor, frame, or conceit is maintained with discipline all the way to the final sentence or released deliberately at a moment of the writer's choosing. Strong essays never let the conceit collapse from neglect.
Argumentative Follow-Through After the Opening Hook
Assesses whether the intellectual energy of the first paragraph is matched and exceeded by what follows, or whether the essay coasts on an interesting premise without doing the work. Strong essays treat the hook as a contract, not a performance.
